OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Fill-in starter Drew Pomeranz pitched five scoreless innings for his second win in his past 20 starts and the Oakland Athletics salvaged a split of a doubleheader by beating the Seattle Mariners 2-0 in the nightcap yesterday. The Mariners overcame a shaky start from ace Felix Hernandez to win the opener 6-4 on Justin Smoak’s two-out single in the 10th inning.
BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) – A minor league team of the Seattle Mariners has pulled off a major rally, coming back from a 16-run deficit to win in the Class A Midwest League. The Clinton LumberKings trailed the Burlington Bees 17-1 after five innings last night in the game between clubs based in Iowa. Clinton wound up winning 20-17 in 12 innings.
SEATTLE (AP) – Kenny Cooper scored in the 88th minute and the Seattle Sounders came from behind to beat FC Dallas 2-1 for their fifth straight win yesterday. Less than two minutes after coming into the game, Cooper converted a pass from Obafemi Martins. Martins also set up Lamar Neagle for the tying goal in the 62nd minute. He now has an MLS-leading six assists.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman has signed a four-year contract extension with the Seattle Seahawks. Sherman announced the news on his website yesterday ahead of a news conference called by the team. Sherman wrote that the extension is for $57.4 million with $40 million guaranteed. Sherman wrote there is no other team or city that he would want to play for.
