SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The chances for recreational marijuana legalization in Oregon could improve as the field of likely ballot measures drops to one. The measure is backed by wealthy donors who say they’ve already gathered more than the 87,000 signatures the state requires. Political experts say the narrowing of the field could improve the odds at the ballot box by allowing supporters to focus their campaign and by reducing voter confusion over multiple options.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Marion County Commission has appointed former state Rep. Kevin Cameron’s chief of staff to replace him in the state Legislature. Republican Denyc (duh-NEES’) Boles isn’t seeking the position in the November election, so she’ll be replaced before the next legislative session.

COQUILLE, Ore. (AP) – Two boys staying overnight with their grandmother have died in a Coos County trailer fire. The District Attorney says the grandmother escaped yesterday morning, and neighbors pulled out a third grandson before flames got too intense for rescue work. The victims have been identified as 13-year-old Christopher Thorp and 8-year-old Grayson Thorp of Roseburg. Preliminary tests show smoke inhalation.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The FBI is hunting a 19-year-old former competitive cheerleader from upscale Lake Oswego who was accused of sex trafficking in a case involving a 17-year-old high school acquaintance. The agency said Julia Haner was allowed to live at home while wearing a monitoring device, but she removed it over the weekend and vanished. The 17-year-old has been returned to her family.
