Cancer Never Sleep-Florence Relay Set To Begin

The opening ceremonies and the opening lap for the annual Florence Relay for Life is coming up tomorrow at noon. That first lap at Miller Park will feature cancer survivors on their way to raising what organizers hope will include collection of more than $100-thousand for the American Cancer Society.

Two dozen teams of walkers have been gathering pledges and donations, holding garage sales, bake sales, and other fund raisers for several months, all in anticipation.

Several of the familiar features will be there: A silent auction; the food court; late night movie; and the finals of “Florence Got Talent”. The very moving Luminaria Ceremony begins at nine pm tomorrow… hundreds of them will line both sides of the walking path at Miller Park late into the night; highlighting the names of those who have dealt with the devastating disease.

New this year will be the Mr. Relay pageant. Ten of the community’s more influential and adventurous men will participate in a competition totally devoid of beauty, grace, style and fashion.

The closing ceremony, with a final tally of the amount of money raised, begins at 11:30 Saturday morning.

Congressional Town Halls

Central coast residents of Oregon’s Fourth Congressional District will have two chances to catch up with Peter DeFazio in the coming weeks. The Springfield Democrat will hold a series of town hall meetings over the next several days; one of those will be in Reedsport, another in Florence.

Next Tuesday, the 12th, DeFazio will be at the Reedsport Community Center from 10:30 to 11:30 before heading down the coast for Bandon and Gold Beach. He’ll be on the south coast again Wednesday and Thursday between Brookings and North Bend.

He’ll be on the I-5 Corridor the first part of the following week, then the Congressman is scheduled to speak at the Oregon Coast Economic Development Summit in Florence August 21st. He’ll host a Town Hall at Siuslaw Public Library that same morning from 11 to Noon before heading back to the Valley where he’ll host several more sessions.

Defend Your Home

How vulnerable is your home to a break in or some other sort of crime? The Lane County Sheriff’s Office is offering a new program that will answer that question.

A group of specially trained volunteers have been vetted with extensive background and criminal checks. They’ll come to your home, evaluate what you have, then give you a list of vulnerabilities… and just as importantly, tell you how to address them.

Sergeant Carrie Carver says there is no cost to participate. Simply call the Sheriff’s office and ask for a free home security inspection.

Driving Costs Static

The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is at the lowest August price since 2010. That’s according to Triple-A, which says the national average dipped by three cents in the past week to $3.49.

Locally the average price slipped two cents a gallon to $3.86, while Oregon’s average price fell by a similar amount to $3.91. Marie Dodds with Triple-A says Oregon is one of 40 states in which prices fell; but they still remain well above the national average.
