Cans and Songs to Battle Hunger….

The goal is to collect one-thousand cans of food tonight during an open mic night in Old Town Florence.

“Cowboy Bill of Oregon”, also known as Bill Olson of Florence, will host the evening at Firenze wine and Chocolate. That’s in the historic Kyle Building adjacent to the Bridgewater Restaurant.

Firenze owners Luis Lopez and Jody Hale say there are excited to host both local and out of town talent from six to nine this evening.

They regularly host musicians in the shop and when Olson recently asked if they would open their doors one evening for the benefit of Florence and Mapleton Food Shares they immediately agreed.

They’ll be offering samples of their wine and chocolate while the performers take to the mic.

The only admission charge is canned food. Hale said there are 12-thousand homeless Oregonians and tens of thousands more who may have a home, but not enough food.

School starts next week for most students in the area, and if your child attends Siuslaw Schools… and will be riding the bus… you’ll need to make sure you complete a transportation registration form.

The registration form was handed out to families last month during school registration, but district officials are reminding parents and guardians to get the forms in before students will be allowed to ride home.

The form is intended to help improve safety and security for students.

District spokesperson Vonnie McClellan said this year there is a new requirement regarding kindergartners… there must be someone at the bus stop to receive the child or they won’t be dropped off. Instead they’ll be returned to the school.

The form is available at the schools as well as online at the Siuslaw School District website.

The Siuslaw Valley Ministerial Association is offering the seventh annual Labor Day Weekend community worship service this weekend.

Three area pastors will combine to preach one sermon at Hans Petersen Field.

Evangelical Church Pastor Rob Griffes (GRIFF-iss) says there will also be a “great worship band featuring musicians and singers from several churches.

A separate youth service for children through fifth grade will be offered in the middle school auxiliary gym.

A free will offering will be accepted to offset costs with the excess being split between Habitat for Humanity and Florence Food Share. The service is Sunday morning, 10:30.
