Smoke Lingers; Investigation is Ongoing; Wake Zone Enforced

Smoke Continues to Pour In

Firefighters continue to battle the Chetco Bar Fire to the south of Florence as smoke continues to pour over the coastal regions.  Air quality improved slightly for Brookings and Gold Beach yesterday as winds pushed southeasterly.  Fire conditions were still extreme with dry, hot weather.  Here in Florence the skies were filled with smoke and some residents complained of itchy, watery eyes as air quality worsened over the weekend.  Warmer temperatures and low winds for the next several days will continue to draw smoke from the south.  ODF reports that some progress has been made on the western side of the fire with containment lines being increased and some mop up operations underway, but containment is estimated to be only about 10 percent.

Davison Investigation Continues

Dallas Oregon Police say there is little to be known yet as to what happened when Heather Davison Disappeared north of Florence on August 12th.  Davison was found four days later by her husband on the same cliff side where Coast Guard had Searched.  Sgt. Steve Dankenbring with the Dallas Police says the investigation is still ongoing and that after several days in the hospital Davison was reunited with her family.

Wake Zone Reminder

With the crowds of Salmon fishers rushing to the waters of the Siuslaw river, the Port is cautioning boaters to adhere to the no-wake rule.  There have been several instances where boaters came in too fast and that can cause accident and injury.  There is a 200 foot slow-no wake speed.  Unsafe boating speeds can damage moored boats and even injure people on the docks.  Violators can be charged with unsafe or reckless operation and could also face civil damages.  The docks will continue to face heavy traffic for the next 2 months and boaters should be aware of the dangers of too-fast speeds.
