$20,000 Grant Awarded Public Arts Committee

The Oregon Community Foundation has selected Florence to be the recipient of a $20,000 grant from the Irene Gerlinger Swindell fund.  The grant was applied for by the Public Arts Committee as part of their ongoing efforts to fund public art in Florence. PAC Committee Chairman Harlan Springer said they are excited to be receiving the funds.  The Oregon Community Foundation inserts more than 100 million dollars annually into Oregon through grants and scholarships.  The announcement comes on the week of the Public Paint Day for the Mural Project on the Central Lincoln PUD building.  That happens today from 11 am through 3 pm.

Dune Restoration Efforts

The Oregon Dunes Restoration Project has drafted updated plans for the coastal dunes.  According to a release from the U.S. Department of Agriculture the project is seeking public comment over the next 30 days.  The goal of the project is to try to restore the dunes to their original status prior to the introduction of invasive European grasses that now have overtaken much of the area from just south of Sea Lion Caves to Coos Bay.  Sensitivities to several species along the coast including the Snowy Plover is high on priority list while also dealing with changing hydrologic conditions and maintaining recreational uses.  There are several ways to provide comments which are listed below.

Free Rides

The City of Florence and the Rhody Express are providing free ride service to home or any lodging within the city limits.  The service will pick up people from the intersection of Bay and Maple streets beginning at 9 pm on Friday night until 3 am, and repeat the service for Saturday evening.  The City reminds residents and visitors to please drink responsibly.

Special Port Meeting

Monday evening the port of Siuslaw will hold a special meeting to review requests for proposals on electrical upgrades planned for the camping area known as C-row.  The meeting will be held at the Port offices located at 100 Harbor street.  The meeting will begin at 5:30.

System Flush

The City of Reedsport water system will be conducting a water system flush Monday through Thursday of next week beginning with Winchester Bay on Monday, the city of Reedsport on Tuesday and Wednesday and Gardiner on Thursday.  This is normal maintenance to flush sediment that may exist in the lines.  During the flushing process residents and businesses may experience low water pressure.
