More King Tides

This weekend there will be more King Tides to deal with on the coast.  Last month’s king tides caught one family in a deadly sneaker wave that took the lives of two small children.  This month’s tides are the 8th through the 10th, this Saturday, Sunday and Monday.  Despite warnings and news coverage of the events, onlookers still tend to get too close.  Chief Boatswain’s Mate, Jay Nilles with the U.S. Coast Guard Siuslaw Station says the loss of life in these circumstances affect everyone.

201: “We’ve got to take every precaution we can.  It’s devastating for the families that lose a loved one. It’s devastating for the response agencies that aren’t able to go out and save that life.”

Nilles again admonishes everyone that desires to see the power of the ocean during these extreme events to stay far enough away to keep safe and never stand on or near jetties or on the rocks.  He says in addition to the force of the waves it only takes 2 inches of water to float a log large enough overcome and crush a person.

Council Meeting

The City of Florence city council will convene this evening at 5:30 at City Hall. On the agenda this evening is a resolution to consider approval for the City of Florence to apply for a USDA Rural Development grant that would allow the city to purchase a replacement for their current radio equipment which would enhance coverage and provide long-term operational sustainability.  The plan is to replace all of the area’s repeaters at a total cost of $260,000 dollars.  The City of Florence’s portion would be $86,667 which would come from a city match of $39,000 and the USDA Grant of $47,667.  Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue and Western Lane Ambulance will also incur a 45% match of funds.

School Board Meeting

There will be a special meeting of the Siuslaw School District on Wednesday.  The board will meet for a work session and then go into executive session.  The executive session is closed to the public.  The School Board will meet to consult with counsel concerning the legal rights of a public body with regards to current litigation or litigation likely to be filed.  They will also meet pursuant to ORS 196.660 to review and evaluate the performance of an individual employed by the district.
