Cold Start

Several entities east of Florence are getting a late start today due to weather conditions.  Some Eugene schools are starting late as well as some medical facilities.  Willamette Valley cancer institute and Research Center is on schedule.  Road conditions are good along 126 according to Tripcheck.  Temperatures dipped below freezing along the coast causing frost and some icy spots.  Drivers should use caution.  Also be careful getting out of your vehicle or on decking and sidewalks this morning.

12th Annual Wine, Chowder and Glass Float Trail

Florence will be celebrating Presidents Day weekend with the 12th Annual Wine, Chowder and Glass Float Trail.  This Friday through Sunday residents and visitors to the coast will have the opportunity to taste wines from around the state and local chowders.  The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce puts the festival together each year and was initially celebrated in October.  The chamber moved the festival to February, mostly due to the timing of the pandemic.  After its successful run last February, the chamber decided to keep it in the winter month.  The expectations are that it will continue to grow.  Those interested in participating can find information at the Visitor’s Center or on the chamber’s website at florencechamber.com. Participation cards will be available this Friday at a cost of $5.00.

Gas Prices

Marie Dodds with AAA Oregon says the price of gas is continuing to increase in Oregon as prices nationwide are dipping slightly.  Regular unleaded gas dipped 4 cents around the country while Oregon rose 2 cents.  On average, drivers are spending $3.80 for a gallon of regular gas in Oregon, and on the coast the average is $3.29 a gallon, but it can be found as low as $3.19.  part of the increase along the coast could be the result of a leak that was detected late last week at a pumping station in California.  The leak caused some panic buying, but the situation was resolved over the weekend.  Prices in Oregon are expected to return to the national trend.

Free Fishing Weekend

If you like to eat fish and crab fresh from the source, this is the weekend you can catch it for free.  The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is offering a free fishing weekend which includes crab and other shellfish.  All day Saturday and Sunday you will not need a license or tag.  Limits are still in place.  You can find information on Lane County and other areas at myodfw.com.
