Football Honors
Several Siuslaw athletes are earning football honors this summer. Recent Siuslaw graduate Will Johnson has been selected to play in the 75th annual Oregon East-West Shrine All-Star Football Game, set for July 25th in Baker City. Meanwhile, three Siuslaw Middle School players have been named to Oregon Bowl rosters in Corvallis on June 20th. Wyatt Fraze and Logan Eichelberger will play for the eighth-grade Red Team, while Maximus Snider has been selected to the seventh-grade Blue Team. The Oregon Bowl benefits Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Emeralds Take First Half of Season
The Eugene Emeralds are Northwest League first-half champions. The Ems defeated Spokane 6-5 Tuesday night to officially clinch the first-half title and earn a return trip to the Northwest League Championship Series for the second straight season. Eugene built a 6-0 lead through three innings, then held off a late Spokane rally. The championship berth caps a strong first half under first-year manager Jacob Heyward.
Ducks and Beavers Honored
Two Oregon Ducks have earned All-Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association. Senior third baseman Drew Smith was named first-team All-West Region after batting .338 with 16 home runs and 64 RBI. Junior second baseman Ryan Cooney earned second-team honors after leading Oregon with 82 hits and 22 doubles. Both players were previously recognized with All-Big Ten honors and helped lead the Ducks to another postseason appearance.
Two Oregon State pitchers have earned All-West Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association. Freshman right-hander Dax Whitney was named a first-team selection after posting a 6-1 record, a 2.00 ERA, and 104 strikeouts in 63 innings. Reliever Albert Roblez earned second-team honors after recording 14 saves and a 1.50 ERA in 24 appearances. Whitney is now eligible for ABCA All-American consideration.
