Black and White Event
The City of Florence has expanded this year’s Black and White Community Collection event, adding several new partners and collection opportunities. Along with free disposal of unwanted tires, refrigerant appliances and propane tanks, residents can also donate pet food and supplies for the Oregon Coast Humane Society, non-perishable food for Florence Food Share, and difficult-to-recycle plastics through Circular Action Alliance. Lane County will also host a Fix-It Fair booth offering free repairs on select household items, while County Transfer and Recycling will accept up to three large bags of yard debris and rechargeable batteries at no charge. The drive-thru event is Saturday, August 22nd from 10 until 1 in the south parking lot of Siuslaw Middle School. The city is also looking for volunteers to help with the event.
Gas Prices
Gas prices continue to move lower across most of the country, including Oregon, following the Independence Day holiday. AAA says the drop is being driven by lower crude oil prices, which have fallen to their lowest levels since the conflict with Iran began. The national average for regular gas is down 6 cents this week to $3.79 a gallon, while Oregon’s statewide average has dropped 13 cents to $4.56. Despite the decline, prices remain about 50 to 65 cents higher than they were a year ago. However, todays actions between Iran and the U.S. have created concern in the market causing crude oil prices to climb, putting in doubt the future decline in gas prices. In Florence, drivers are paying an average of $4.45 a gallon for regular unleaded.
Block Party
The City of Florence is inviting the community to Historic Old Town for its annual Community Block Party on Friday, July 17th. Bay Street, between Laurel Street and the Siuslaw River Bridge, will be closed to traffic from 5 until 10 p.m. for the free event. Live music begins at 6 p.m. with the popular band 5 Guys Named Moe performing until 10. The block party will also feature local partner agencies and community organizations, along with activities for all ages. Admission is free, and everyone is welcome to attend.
Tuition Relief for Homeless Students
The Oregon Department of Human Services is encouraging eligible young adults who have experienced homelessness to apply for the Youth Experiencing Homelessness Program Tuition and Fee Waiver. The program covers remaining tuition and fees at Oregon public universities and community colleges after grants and scholarships are applied. Applicants must be under 25, have experienced at least 6 months of unaccompanied homelessness between ages 14 and 24, and have received services from a program partner. There is no application deadline. More information is available through the Oregon Department of Human Services.
