Rabid Bat Detected in Lane County
Lane County Public Health says a bat found in Lane County has tested positive for rabies, marking the third rabid bat confirmed in the county this year. The bat was tested by Oregon State University’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. State Public Health Veterinarian Dr. Emilio DeBess is urging pet owners to make sure dogs and cats are vaccinated, saying protected pets help reduce the risk of rabies exposure to people. Rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms begin. Health officials remind residents not to handle bats or other wildlife and to contact a veterinarian if a pet comes in contact with a bat.
