Saluting Military Veterans…

By many accounts, the weather in France on November 11th, 1918 was cold and drizzly for the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.

It should be sunny and dry this afternoon in Florence when local residents gather in Old Town for the 8th annual Florence Veteran’s Day Parade.

This year’s theme is Honoring Women Veterans, with all women who have served in the military invited to also serve as parade Grand Marshals.

Parade entries will begin forming on Quince Street at noon in front of the Florence Events Center.  The parade will head down the hill on Quince and through Old Town beginning at one PM.

A brief gathering will be held at the parade ending… Veteran’s Memorial Park.

Parade Committee President Tim Sapp says any veteran of military service is welcome to walk in the parade.

Property Taxes Due

This year the Lane County Tax Assessor’s office sent out about 173-thousand individual property tax statements.  They went out in early October, with a November 15th deadline for at least the initial payments.

That deadline is just a few days away and Assessor Mike Cowles is reminding property owners that several “drive up” drop boxes are available for making your payments.

There are eight locations around the county, including four in Eugene, one each in Springfield, Cottage Grove and Junction City.

The site in Florence is the same as it has been for several years… On Greenwood Street, just off Ninth, in front of the Justice Center.

Cowles says property tax payments can be made in three installments.  The drop-sites will be open until midnight Friday, November 15th for the first.

Mailed payments are also just fine, according to Cowles. They just need to be post-marked no later than Friday to avoid any additional charges.

Winter Folk

Single event and season passes for the 2014 Winter Folk Festival at the Events Center go on sale December 1st.  This year’s lineup includes folk artists from at least two different eras.

The Brothers Four started in Seattle in 1957 and are one of the longest continuously running groups of that time period.

John McEuen sang, wrote and performed with the 60s era Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Both will appear on stage through the weekend of January 18th and 19th, along with several other musical acts.

Mike and Carleen McCornack will be featured at the annual Kids Koncert on Friday the 17th.

The Winter Folk Festival will also feature the popular Artisan Craft Fair, and of course the Pie Baking Contest.
