Florence Festival of Books

The 10th annual Florence Festival of books begins today.  The event features over 70 authors and publishers who will be on hand to discuss their books and the writing process with visitors.  This afternoon offers a publishers symposium that will discuss the process for getting a book published and what publishers look for in a book.  That event is at 3pm and is free of charge.  The evening presentation will be with author and columnist Bob Welch.  Welch has over 20 books to his credit and will be speaking about his latest book the Wizard of Foz, Dick Fosbury’s One-Man High-Jump Revolution.  Tickets for Welch’s presentation are $8.00 in advance and $10.00 at the door.  The Florence Festival of Books continues on Saturday from 10am until 4 pm with information, presentations, and book signings.  Saturday’s event is free.

Light Up A Life

The 24th annual Light up a Life ceremony has a new date.  Traditionally the event has been scheduled for early December, but Peace Health Peace Harbor medical center has moved up the date to coincide with National Hospice and Palliative Care Month in November.  The new date for the ceremony is November 9th from 2 to 3:30 pm at the Florence Event Center.  Families are invited to submit photos of loved ones to be included in a memorial slide presentation.  More information is available at peacehealth.org/LUAL-Florence

Vintage Trailers Visit Florence

The Port of Siuslaw Campground in Florence will be the site of the “Going with the Flo Vintage Trailer Rally” October 18th through the 20th.  More than 50 vintage trailers are expected to be on display for the event.  Fully restored trailers and some in the restoration process will be there for visitors to tour.  Classic trailers from the 50’s and 60’s are the focus of the group.

Traffic Alternatives

Traffic congestion along highway 101 between 12th street and the Siuslaw River Bridge is occurring as workers prepare to pave the road.  Alternate routes into old town are Spruce street to 126 and then left on Quince street and west of Highway 101 on Kingwood.

Habitat Hands Off Latest Home

Habitat for Humanity will be handing over the keys to its latest home at 4 pm this afternoon.  The Lloyd family dedication for the house on 7th and Kingwood has had some long delays, but construction and landscaping is finished and ready for move in.  The Home was initially expected to be ready on April 1st of this year.
