Soroptomist Christmas Baskets

This Saturday the Soroptomist International of Florence will hold its annual Community Christmas Basket Project.  The annual event provides food for families in the community and toys for children ages infant to 12 years old.  Carol Bennett is one of the organizers of this event who says the food distribution will be held at Siuslaw Middle School.

”People will line up on 27th street between Kingwood and Oak Street and it’s a first come first serve basis.”

Bennett says there is no pre requisite for the food, only that people will have to wait in line.  Traditionally the Soroptomists purchase about $20,000 in food for the event and she says that they are still looking for donations in order to make that goal.

“We will have food, we just may not have as big a selection if we don’t have more cash.”

Food distribution will happen from 10am until 1 pm.  In addition to food, toys will be handed out to families at a separate location.  The Church of the Nazarene on 12th and Nopal Street from 9am until 2pm.  Children will not be allowed in the toy distribution area.  People wishing to make cash donations to help pay for the food can contact Carol Bennett at 541-991-3455.

Gas Prices Dip

Marie Dodds with AAA Oregon says Oregon drivers are getting a bigger break than most other states.  Price of a gallon of regular gas has dropped 6 cents this past week in Oregon and 19 cents since the beginning of the month, the second largest drop in the nation.  Locally the average price of a gallon of regular gas has only dropped 2 cents to $3.05 a gallon, but those prices could dip more this week as new supplies arrive.  Dodds says the biggest impact on prices is the decrease in demand and the increase in supply.

Florence Police Auxiliary Host Santa

This Saturday the Florence Police Auxiliary will host a meeting with Santa for the community.  The event will be from 3 to 5pm at the Justice Center on 9th and Greenwood.  Children will have the opportunity to get a picture with Santa and collect a toy.  Donations of unwrapped toys are still being accepted and can be dropped off at the Justice Center from 8-5 today through Friday.
