19 New COVID Cases for Florence; Grim Milestone; City Council Meeting; FEC Celebrates 25 Years; LCPH to Make Recommendations to Commissioners

19 New COVID Cases for Florence

19 cases of COVID-19 were reported for the Florence area in the latest numbers out on Friday from Lane County Public Health.  That is a two day total of 29 cases with weekend numbers yet to be tallied.  The growing number of cases in the past several weeks has caused Lane County Public Health to release several barrages of ads surrounding the need to get people vaccinated.  After 18 months of the pandemic this last month Lane County has been inundating the area with public service announcements about the importance of vaccinations.  On Saturday scores of people were at the Siuslaw Middle School to receive a vaccination and those that did received a $50 dollar Visa Card as well as lunch from Los Compadres restaurant.  Arc of Lane County in association with Lane County Public Health will continue the vaccination clinics every 3 weeks until the need is no longer needed in the community according to ARC officials.

Grim Milestone

The Oregon Health Authority is reporting that more than 3,000 Oregonians have lost their battle with COVID-19 since the pandemic started and the OHA is saying the numbers are likely to rise as well as hospitalizations.  The numbers are projected to rise through September 7th.   There is good news from the OHA.  There has been a renewed interest in vaccinations.  On Friday the OHA reported almost 10,000 vaccinations over a several day period.  To date more than 2.7 million Oregonians have been vaccinated.

City Council Meeting

This evening the Florence city Council will convene for a special session to continue its work on last week’s agenda.  The meeting was split in two to allow for many items to be heard.  This week the city will hear requests on Street closures for a planned Tailgate party at Cross Road Assembly, as well as one for Bay Street from the Siuslaw Bridge to the Port Parking Lot to allow for the annual Rods and Rhodys Charity Car Show on September 11th.  There will also be a public hearing on a proposed mural on the exterior of Lovejoys Restaurant and Tea Room.  there are also several consent agenda items.  City Council meeting schedules and agendas are available at ci.florence.or.us

FEC Celebrates 25 Years

This Wednesday the Florence Events Center will be holding an outdoor celebration on the property to commemorate the 25 years the facility has been in operation.  The event will be held from 5:30 until 10 pm with live music, food, and a cornhole tournament.  Live music will be provided by 5 Guys Named Moe.  The event is free to the public.

LCPH to Make Recommendations to Commissioners

The Lane County Public Health Administration will be brining a draft board order before the Lane County Board of Commissioners tomorrow.  The draft will add immediate recommendations for businesses, organizations and employers to limit the ongoing community spread of the coronavirus.  Lane County Public Health is also recommending the wearing of masks in indoor spaces any time you are with individuals other than your immediate household.  Mask wearing where a distance of 6 feet cannot be maintained avoiding crowded public spaces indoors and out.  They are also recommending that unvaccinated individuals stay home and avoid public interaction as much as possible.
