9th Street Paving This Week

The weather has finally cooperated with efforts to finish the paving project on Ninth street in Florence.  The City of Florence has had to wait for the right weather window to complete the project started last year.  New water lines and upgrades to sewer outlet were completed early, but rain and cold weather, both here and in the valley kept the project from an early spring projected date.  On Friday the city released the time line for the completion of the project.  Beginning tomorrow flaggers will be located between Rhododendron Drive and Kingwood as crews from Riverbend Materials begin paving patches along the roadway and then removing a layer of asphalt with a process called rotomilling.  According to the city the process will take about two days to complete before the next phase of the project which is laying hot oil and a fabric underlayment.  The West bound lane will be paved first on Thursday followed by the east bound lane on Friday.  The entire process will take about 7 days and is expected to be completed by Tuesday, July 19th.  the City of Florence suggest that people that work along that corridor find alternative routes to work, but if that is not an option, be prepared for some delay and drive carefully.

As well as an application related to the conversion of a former print shop into a deli on property located at 1856 37th street.  The commission meets at City Hall at 5:30.

COVID-19 Breakthrough Numbers

The rate of COVID-19 in persons that are fully vaccinated continues to outpace vaccinated individuals.  The Oregon Health Authority reported that of the 45,843 cases reported in the month of June 25,907 or 56.5% were in cases where a person was either partially or fully vaccinated.  The OHA says that Oregon has been back in a high risk category for some time and people should consider returning to mask wearing indoors and in crowded spaces.  The OHA still says that vaccines are safe and effective.  Those who have gotten the virus that were vaccinated generally see minimal symptoms with some exceptions.  The OHA will report the July figures on August 11th.
